I was pointed to this article by Dr. Jerry Pournelle.
California once again leads the way in nannyism. They have enacted a law that on the surface, appears benevolent. Yet underneath that thin veneer lies corruption and abuse. The care of our elderly (with their numbers growing) is not one to be abdicated to the State. This is a matter that was (once) handled by the family and in their absence, neighbors and the local churches. Why do we think that the state can do a better job? This is the same bureaucratic nightmare that birthed the child welfare system and how well does that work?
The farther that we stray from communities the worse off we become. When we turn local matters over to the state, and state matters over to the Feds, we are on a slippery slope.

We will have to agree to disagree on this one. I am no fan of the Social Security.
Social Security has turned into nothing more than a government funded Ponzi scheme. My family (my Father) grew up in rural southern Mississippi, during the heart of the great depression. Listening to his stories of growing up, it was evident that the community made sure that all had enough. The community was centered around the family and the local church. To a large extent, it still is.
As to the point of the article, it is most certainly a failing (yet again) of the state. They usurped the rights of the community, and then failed the very people they were supposed to protect. Until they can demonstrate mastery of the education system, let alone a foster and adoption system, I'll thank them to keep their grubby hands off me in my "golden" years.
